Wall mounted exit sign is a back-up lighting source that typically operates in the event of a power outage where the mains power supply is lost and normal electrical lighting fails. Emergency escape lighting can operate in similar situations including loss of power due to a fire. Where there are wall mounted exit sign installed, sudden periods of darkness, which could lead to danger to occupants, can be avoided.

Benefits of Wall Mounted Exit Sign
Energy Savings
One of the main advantages of Wall mounted exit signs over traditional signs is their energy efficiency. Wall mounted exit signs use significantly less energy than incandescent or fluorescent signs, leading to lower electricity bills and reduced carbon emissions.
Longer Lifespan
Another significant advantage of Wall mounted exit signs in the context of fluorescent light conversion is their longer lifespan. LED lights have a rated life of up to 100,000 hours, while traditional bulbs typically last between 1-2 years.
This longer lifespan means that Wall mounted exit signs will need to be replaced far less frequently, reducing maintenance costs and downtime, making it an attractive option for businesses and organizations who want to reduce their overall lighting maintenance costs.
In addition, because Wall mounted exit signs do not use filaments or glass bulbs, they are less susceptible to breakage and damage, further reducing replacement costs. When converting from fluorescent lighting to LED lighting, switching to Wall mounted exit signs can provide a significant cost and energy savings.
Low Maintenance
Wall mounted exit signs require minimal maintenance compared to traditional signs. LED lights do not have filaments or glass bulbs that can break or wear out, reducing the need for frequent bulb replacements. In addition, Wall mounted exit signs do not emit heat, reducing the likelihood of damage to surrounding materials or fire hazards.
Wall mounted exit signs are also more durable than traditional signs, and are less likely to become dislodged or damaged in the event of a seismic event, windstorm, or other natural disasters. This makes Wall mounted exit signs ideal for buildings in areas prone to earthquakes, hurricanes, or other natural disasters.
Brighter and More Visible
Wall mounted exit signs are also brighter and more visible than traditional signs, improving safety in the event of an emergency. LED lights produce a clear and uniform illumination, making it easier for occupants to see and navigate towards the nearest exit.
Traditional incandescent or fluorescent signs may emit dim or uneven lighting, making it harder for occupants to locate the nearest exit. In addition, Wall mounted exit signs can be programmed to produce flashing or pulsing light, increasing their visibility, and alerting occupants to the presence of an exit.
Reduced Fire Hazards
Another benefit of Wall mounted exit signs is that they produce less heat than traditional signs, reducing the risk of fire hazards. Incandescent exit signs generate a significant amount of heat, which can cause the surrounding materials to dry out or ignite.
This can be particularly dangerous in buildings with flammable materials or high-temperature environments. Wall mounted exit signs, on the other hand, produce very little heat and are less likely to ignite surrounding materials.

The primary purpose of wall mounted exit sign is to provide sufficient lighting so that occupants can evacuate from a building safely, and to illuminate other general fire safety features such as manual call points and firefighting equipment such as fire extinguishers.
It is designed in such a way that in the event of the regular power supply failing, illumination of escape routes and fire safety equipment is provided quickly, effectively, and for a sufficient amount of time. This is to ensure that in the event of an emergency such as a fire, building occupants are able to evacuate in a safe and timely manner.
When a fire alarm sounds, and in a situation where fire is spreading through a building, a sense of panic may ensue. If you add to this a building being plunged into darkness by a power failure, occupants may become disorientated and confused in a situation where every second counts for safe evacuation. Clear escape routes that are illuminated make it safer and clearer for occupants to get to safety.
Why Are Wall Mounted Exit Signs Important?
Wall mounted exit signs Illuminate a Path to Safety and an Entrance for Help. One way to help protect the patrons inside an enclosed building is to ensure that each exit is well marked by exit signs. People are often unable to think logically in high-stress, emergency situations. Unfortunately, this can mean that even if people have been working in or visiting the same building every day for years, they may not be able to find an exit when the room is dark. Even if emergency lighting comes on, it can be difficult to differentiate where a wall ends and a door begins in smoky, dimly lit conditions.
That is why it is so important to include clearly illuminated exit signs indicating where the doors are. Wall mounted exit signs help direct people who may be panicked and confused towards safety. It's important that these exit signs clearly communicate their message so that they can be understood by anyone. Traditionally, exit signs have one word written on them: "E X I T" which clearly communicates an undeniable message. However, children and people who don't speak English may not understand what these signs mean. Therefore, in recent times the trend has shifted towards exit signs consisting of just pictograms. This is a more universal way of communicating the same message.
The importance of wall mounted exit signs in being able to find a way out of a building cannot be overstated, and indeed, this is the main function of exit signs. However, another equally important function of these signs is that they help first responders navigate their way around the building. Clearly illuminated doorways can help paramedics, firefighters, and other personnel get help to the people that need it inside. Without the signs, it can take first responders extra time to discover clear access and egress routes, which will delay much-needed services.
To properly maintain these units, business owners should consider these steps:
30 Day Visual inspections - This inspection is done once every 30 days. Checking for loose or exposed wiring and securing it (frayed wiring is itself a fire hazard and loose wiring can be accidentally snagged and lead to further damage). Ensure that exit signs and emergency lights are securely mounted to the wall or ceiling. Look for any cracks or blemishes in the housing because cracked outdoor units may need to be replaced due to water seepage issues. Consider installing protective guards and shields to protect these units from physical damage.
Functional inspections - These units should undergo several functional tests on a monthly or yearly basis. These tests are created to check for damage to the lights' exterior and verify that the lights are functioning.
There are two types of testing mechanisms in most equipment: equipment that needs to be manually tested (i.e., by pushing and holding down the 'Test Button' on the unit) and equipment designated as 'self testing' (i.e., has built-in circuitry that can perform the 30 second monthly and 90 minute annual tests).
Manual testing equipment requires you to find the 'push-to-test' button that interrupts AC power and engages the backup battery. Exit signs should stay illuminated, and emergency lighting should turn on. Hold the button for 30 seconds, observing that the illumination stays on for the full 30 seconds.
Self-testing equipment is ideal for facilities with a large number of units. It has a 'push-to-test' button and a diagnostic LED that illuminates to convey test results. The button should be pressed two times to activate the 30-second test. After a while, examine the LED tell-tale. Steady green indicates normal service, while red indicates a failure of some sort. You can also set the units to perform a 30-second battery test every 30 days automatically.
Record Keeping - Keep written records of testing and maintenance for further review. For any unit that was not tested, document the unit's location and a reason for the lack of testing.

How Are Wall Mounted Exit Signs Mounted?
When deciding what type of wall mounted exit signs or emergency lights to purchase, mounting configuration can play a very important role. To those not familiar with mounting configurations, the terminology can be very confusing.
Flush mount / wall mount
Does not involve the use of mounting canopy. Units typically have knock-out pattern on back plate to mount directly to junction box. (May also allow for "Ceiling Mount" in emergency light fixtures only.)
Ceiling mount
Typically requires use of mounting canopy from top of fixture. Some units may further specify Drop Ceiling/New Construction or Sheet Rock/Remodel applications. Use of ceiling mount for exit signage may require double face. (May also allow for "Wall Mount" in emergency light fixtures only.)
Side mount
Sometimes confused with "Wall Mount", side mounting typically requires use of a mounting canopy. Canopy is affixed to the side of the unit and then attached to wall. Use of side mount for exit signage may require double face.
Wall mount angle down
Special mounting configuration mostly limited to edge lit exit signage. May require mounting canopy affixed to the top of the unit and then attached to wall. Edge lit face then rotates down. In recessed applications, the face itself may be curved down.
Recessed mount
Commonly used for ceiling mount units in which housing is actually located above the ceiling. Some units may further specify Drop Ceiling/New Construction or Sheet Rock/Remodel applications.
Pendant mount
This configuration requires the use of a pendant kit (which may be an optional add-on). Allows ceiling mountable units to be suspended from a high or sloped ceiling to be more visible.
Why Are Wall Mounted Exit Signs Red or Green?
Exit signs are typically red or green because of how humans interact with these colors. Red is generally seen as a "warning," while green represents the desire to "go." Red exit signs indicate that there is a direct path of escape available when an emergency exists. A green alternative encourages people to go toward a specific direction to get away from a building when unexpected circumstances exist.
Some jurisdictions are moving away from red exit signs because this color is also considered a "stop" indicator. Drivers are trained to recognize it on stop signs, stoplights, yield signs, and other warnings in public spaces. Red is also less visible from a distance than green, which is why large buildings with open spaces opt for that exit sign color.
